Summer Calling! Stephanie Ho Artist Newsletter #6

Inline image 1

Hello!

I recently got back from a 3 weeks' holiday in Hong Kong. Though the main purpose of the trip was to visit family, I took the opportunity to meet up with some new and old clients there. It is always a delight to hear how my paintings brought life to their rooms.

As mentioned in my previous newsletter, I have been invited to do a collaboration with artist and curator, Leah Michelle, raising money for Action for Children.

The event took place at the New Artist Fair 28 - 30 March. Through selling raffle tickets at the art fair, a lucky person won the painting, raising a total of £340 for the charity. Some of the paintings exhibited are still up for grab, including the very popular Nano series (12 x 12 cm), a selection of 30 x 30 cm from the Human Planet and the latest Four Seasons series. Do let me know if you would be interested.

After a short break, I am back in the saddle. Though life is so different with a little one, I really treasure every single minute I get to paint. There are so many new ideas floating in my head; I just can't wait to put them all on canvas!

With summer just around the corner, I am very much looking forward to some fruitful and inspirational months ahead.

Best regards,

Stephanie

It's been a very busy few months for work. Among all excitement, the highlight got to be the completion of one of my largest commission to date, including The Great Queue, 250 x 90 cm, which has taken over my living room for a good couple of months. It's a relief to learn that the client is very pleased with the outcome.

Thank you for your support! Stephanie Ho Artist Newsletter #3

HELLO!!

It's been a while since my last newsletter. Can't believe a few months have just flown by in the blink of the eye. Before giving you an update of all the excitements in the last 4 months, I have to give a massive THANK YOU to all those who voted for my painting, Sky Fall 007 (image below), and shared the link at the Asia Contemporary Art Prize on Facebook . Unfortunately I didn't win any prize on this occasion (I believe I came third at the People's Choice Prize), nonetheless I was really overwhelmed with all the support and nice comments. Thank you everyone!!!

A quick rewind to 1st March, when the New Artists Fair took place at the Candid Art Trust. Run by Oliver Norris and his artist / curator wife, Leah, of Lemon Art, the New Artist Fair was one of the best organized and promoted art fairs that I ever took part in. I am blessed to be one of the top sellers at the fair and have been invited to take part in People - A Figurative Exhibition curated by Lemon Art at the Bankside Gallery, 48 Hopton Street, London, SE1 9JH (3 - 7 July 2013). Please let me know if you would be interested to attend the private view on4 July 6 - 9 pm.

You may also read an interview of myself with Lydia Symonds of Artefacts, whom I met at the New Artist Fair:
We made a last minute decision for a trip to Hong Kong in April. It all came about with the personalized commission by a very nice lady, Charmagne (image below left). The painting included herself, her husband, two daughters, as well as a couple of her extended family members among all other figures. Please feel free to contact me (stephaniesyho@gmail.com) if you would like to find out more about personalized commissions and see samples of the works.

We took the opportunity to join the Hong Kong Art Walk during our short stay, which is an annual charity event much anticipated by all the art lovers in town each year. All the art galleries opened their doors from 4 pm till midnight on that day, accompanying the artworks were great food and wine. Art Beatus Gallery kindly exhibited a selection of paintings from my latest Sky Fall series. It was an evening of none stop mingling, however, the highlight for me got to be meeting Kalina (image above right), who recently purchased Human Planet 02, 100 x 140 cm (diptych).
Staying on the charity theme, I took part in the East West Art Award Charity Exhibition at La Galleria in London Pall Mall 30 April - 4 May.I was first introduced to the East West Art Award last autumn when my painting, Linked In (100 x 100 cm), was selected as one of the finalists at the award. The organization has a close connection with Japan, and the aim for this charity exhibition was to raise money for the children of the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquakes two years ago. The online charity sale is on till the end of the year.

Spring is indeed a season for love and sharing. My painting, It's A Small World (30 x 30 cm), was up for grab at the Hands On Hong Kong Charity Auction this year. It is the fourth consecutive years for me to support this charity. I am delighted to learn that the painting was a big hit and has raised HK$10,500 (~ £870) for the charity.
London is a great place for artists. I have made so many good friends throughout 17 years here, all from very different walks of life, yet share a passion for art. I attended the Japanese Supper Club at our local on 20 April, which was hosted by chef Luiz Hara. In addition to great food, I met so many interesting people that evening. Luiz visited the following week to view some of my paintings. We are currently planning a mini exhibition of my works in conjunction with his July Supper Clubs. For more information, please visit http://www.thelondonfoodie.co.uk.

We are so lucky to be living in an area where you find great food at doorstep. Como 3 Cantina Chic is another one of our new found favorite in Angel. We got friendly with chef Pierre Dallee who has travelled around the world with his culinary ventures, including Hong Kong and Mexico. Pierre has shown great interest in my paintings and has kindly offered some wall space in his restaurant for my works. We plan to do the hanging around mid-July.

Apologies for this longer-than-usual newsletter, I promised it won't be four months till my nextnewsletter. It has indeed been a amazing few months for my work. I am really grateful for all the opportunities given by various individuals and parties, and I much anticipate a busy second half of 2013!

All the best,

Stephanie

Interview with the New Artist Fair 2013

How long have you been making art?

Painting has been my favourite pastime as long as I could remember. It is like my safety blanket, it makes me feel relax, secure and happy.
It might sound a bit strange, my first degree was actually in economics. I could still clearly remember the time when I set up my easel in my university hall of residence to paint, while most students were busy preparing for their exams in the library.
So, it’s not hard to understand how I ended up going to an art college after graduating from the London School of Economics and eventually painting full-time since 2007, after a short career in arts management.
How long have I been making art? Professionally, I would say about 5 years.

What genre best describes what you do?

I am a painter and have always worked with oils; linen canvas is my favourite surface. The subjects of my works are things that I see or experience on a daily basis. I live in a metropolitan city, and what I see the most are crowds of people.
I always find it difficult to identify myself with a particular genre in the art history. Many people say my paintings resemble the work of L. S. Lowry, who is famous for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures.

How has your artwork evolved since you began?

In my early works, I enjoyed doing cityscapes in muted colours, a single human figure is often featured in the painting, reflecting the loneliness of people living in big cities.
Inspired by the works of many Chinese contemporary artists, I started experimenting with more vibrant colours in my Still Frames series. Rather than placing human figures in urban landscape settings, I have kept the contextual details of the background to the minimal, so viewers can concentrate on the choreographic patterns formed by the crowds.
Still sticking with the “crowds” theme, the figures in my latest series, Human Planet, have shrunk in size, yet ironically, with more details. I have also introduced the use of shadows to enhance the elements of space, light and time.
My style has changed quite a lot over the past few years, yet one thing that tied my works together is the presence of human figures in them, and the choice of palette reflects my emotion at the time.

Is there a medium or technique that you have yet to try but would like to?

The work that I am doing right now requires a lot of precision. I use tiny brushes and every single stroke is carefully placed. Some works can take up to hundreds of hours to complete.
I would like to explore the expressive side of my creativity, using big brushes and palette knives, enhancing the texture of colours and the three-dimensional elements of the painting.
The possibility of using prints, photography and video to introduce movements to my works are other areas that I would like to experiment.

What would your ideal solo exhibition be like and where would it be held?

Echoing the subject of my work, my ideal solo exhibition would be held in a place where many many people could attend, it would be accessible to people from all nationalities, all walks of life; not just exhibition goers. A busy international airport could be such a place where travelers from different parts of the world cross path with my works en route to their destinations.
Saatchi Gallery is my favourite gallery in London, so having the opportunity to have a solo exhibition there would be amazing.

What do you like the most about the art world?

What I like most about the art world is the rich and well-documented art history that it possessed. From cave drawings in the Stone Age, to the Renaissance, neoclassical, realism, impressionism, expressionism, postmodernism… it just goes on and on and on. All these art movements are so distinctive and representative of the history and culture of their eras. There is so much for artists to learn and get inspirations from.

If you could change anything about the London art scene, what would it be?

I actually love the London art scene and I feel very privileged to be able to work as an artist in this city. There are so many great museums and galleries, and most of them are free. Opportunities for emerging artists are abundant and people here truly appreciate art. London artists are also very supportive of each other.
If I have to name one thing that I want to change, it would be the availability of working space for artists. Renting a studio is very expensive in London. I am currently working from home. I live in a small apartment, so there’s a limit to the size of work I can produce. I would love to work on a much larger scale if space is not an issue.

Who or what inspires you to make art?

I get a lot of inspirations at doorstep. They are things that I see and experience everyday. I love going to train stations, parks, squares, shopping malls, etc. and observe activities of people there.
I also enjoy going to see exhibitions, there’s always something to learn from another artist’s work, be it a colour, a type of material, the arrangement or even the titles of the artworks.
Gerhard Richter, Julian Opie and L. S. Lowry are a few of many artists that I admired. I love Richter for the diversity of his work, Opie for his simplicity, precision and linearity and Lowry for the palette that he used.

Where did you sell your first painting and how did it feel?

I sold my first painting to a friend who really admired my work when I was still doing my economics degree in university. Though not much, but it felt amazing to be able to make money from something that I enjoy doing. It gave me the confidence to follow my dream and pursue a career in art. Knowing my work could bring joy to another person is priceless.

What are your plans for the New Artist Fair in March?

I plan to show a selection of paintings from my latest Human Planet series, including my favourite work to date, “Departure”. It has taken me hundreds of hours to do, by far the painting that took the longest time to complete and was short-listed for the Cork Street Open Exhibition last summer.
You may see other works from the Human Planet series on my website:

Happy Spring Festival! 2013 Blog #2

Inline image 1

With spring around the corner, we are entering the busy season of the world's art scene. Before announcing all my upcoming shows, let me give you a quick recap of all the actions last month.

Cork Street Winter Show 17 - 25 January 2013

I am delighted that my shortlisted work, "The Journey" has once again made it onto the wall of the Cork Street Winter Show. Both sales and visitor numbers were down this year due to the snow over the weekend. Nevertheless, my painting has received some very encouraging responses and as of past experiences, the Cork Street exhibition has always been a great platform for future sales.

Candid Art Exhibition 17 - 20 January 2013

The Candid Art Exhibition took place over the same weekend as the Cork Street Winter Show. Despite the wintery weather, the private view evening was very well attended, the gallery was buzzing with live music and artists performances. My special thanks to all those who came to show their support despite the adverse weather condition.

Continuing with the winter theme, I took the opportunity to observe activities of Londoners on these cold, wet and gloomy days. I was absolutely fascinated by the shapes and colours of umbrellas as well as the reflections of water, which will no doubt feature in many of my new works.
